AI Spotlight: New York Times vs. OpenAI 🤯

Why it matters? 🤷🏻‍♂️

A legal case brought by The New York Times alleges copyright infringement against OpenAI and Microsoft, asserting that ChatGPT was unlawfully trained on Times data.

If the Times' requests are granted, it could mark the termination of ChatGPT.

Over several months, legal representatives engaged in negotiations for a licensing agreement that would provide compensation to the Times for the unsanctioned use of their content. As discussions became more contentious, the Times' attorneys issued a threat to sue if an agreement couldn't be reached.

That moment has arrived. Unable to find common ground in private talks, the dispute will now be settled in a courtroom.

OpenAI contends that, as the data was utilised for research and ChatGPT transforms the Times material during training, it falls within acceptable usage. Predictably, the Times holds a different view. In the lawsuit, they argue that "...there is nothing transformative about using the Times content without payment to create products that substitute for the Times and steals audiences away from it."

Indeed, they raise a valid argument.‼️

Originally, ChatGPT wasn't intended for commercial purposes; it emerged as a research preview, with OpenAI unaware of its eventual popularity. Copyright concerns weren't anticipated initially. However, the immense success of ChatGPT led OpenAI to explore its commercial potential, potentially hastening its entry into the market.

The lawsuit is ambitious, seeking billions in damages, and the Times' legal team is urging the courts to mandate the destruction of all Language Models (LLMs) trained on publicly available data, which includes ChatGPT.

The feasibility of such a request is uncertain. While most similar "AI is stealing our stuff" lawsuits in the US have been dismissed by the courts, only time will reveal the outcome.

Microsoft and OpenAI have chosen not to comment on the lawsuit at this point. We will keep you updated on this developing story, as the resolution of this case is likely to have a profound impact on the future of AI.

Tool Talk: Seamless Streaming by Meta 🪄

Use Case: AI speech-to-speech translation

Why you should care?Meta's AI researchers are on a mission to overcome language barriers faced by humanity, and their latest breakthrough, Seamless Streaming, is a significant stride in that direction.

Seamless Streaming is an AI tool designed to translate and transcribe speech with remarkably low latency. Users can communicate in their native language, and the tool delivers the message in the listener's preferred language.

This technology provides nearly real-time translation, achieving latency under two seconds. Although currently in a limited research preview, it is anticipated that this capability will be integrated into various Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and many others.

The Hugging Face demo is accessible on both mobile and desktop browsers, offering over 30 output languages for testing. It is recommended to enable the "Expressive" setting for a slightly enhanced user experience, as it introduces a minimal latency while making the output sound less robotic.
