Welcome to this week's edition of "Storiies with AI.”
Do you know?🤔The UK government has announced over $100 million in funding to implement responsible AI research and development. This includes $12.5 million for regulators to develop tools to monitor AI risks and $113 million for 9 new AI healthcare research hubs. The government plans to take a flexible, context-based approach to AI regulation rather than introducing new legislation for now.

Do AI Labelling and Watermarks Pose a Threat? 🤯

Why it matters?
Most experts agree that AI won't be creating deadly viruses or initiating nuclear attacks anytime soon. Instead, the current threat posed by AI lies in its ability to generate convincing text, images, and videos designed to deceive people.
Major players in the AI industry are aware of this threat and are actively working to mitigate its negative impacts. Meta, for instance, recently announced plans to address the rise of disinformation by collaborating with industry partners to establish technical standards for identifying AI-generated content. Once these standards are in place, Meta platforms like Facebook and Instagram will automatically detect and label AI-generated images.
While Meta's initiative to label AI-generated images with visible and invisible watermarks seems like a positive step, it may inadvertently worsen the problem. Why?
For this approach to be effective, Meta must ensure that all AI-generated images are consistently tagged without fail. Any oversight could undermine the system's reliability.
Relying solely on watermarks to identify AI-generated content could lead users to develop a false sense of security. If an image slips past Meta's detection algorithm unnoticed, users may be unprepared to recognize the deception. Absence of a watermark could wrongly signal authenticity.
Meta's strategy risks undermining our critical thinking skills. Presently, society is becoming increasingly cautious about online information, but watermarking and labeling may reverse this progress. Depending on corporations and governments to authenticate reality could erode our ability to discern truth from falsehood.
So, what's the solution?
Maintain a critical perspective on all content encountered online. If something seems deceptive, speak up. It's our responsibility to shape the kind of world we want to inhabit.
