Why this matters?Just before the New Hampshire primary this week, some voters received a call that raised concerns nationwide.
While prerecorded calls from politicians encouraging people to vote are common, this one took an unexpected turn. Instead of the usual urging to vote, listeners were advised to skip this election and save their votes for November. Odd, right?
Although most would typically identify this as a scam call, the use of President Joe Biden's authentic-sounding voice added a twist. The caller even threw in a classic Biden phrase, "What a bunch of malarkey!" Moreover, the caller ID suggested it was from a former chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party.
Surprisingly, the entire call was created by AI. An anonymous person employed ElevenLabs' AI to replicate Biden's voice, aiming to influence the primary elections.
While one incident is alarming, the concerning part is that this issue will likely escalate. AI voice cloning is becoming more convincing, user-friendly, and accessible. AI robocalls are the next step in the evolution of scams, following email scams and phishing attempts.
The good news is that awareness is the solution. Just as knowing about a "prince of Nigeria wanting to give you money scam" makes it hard to fall for, awareness of scams involving generative AI technology provides a defense.
