Why it matters:​
Remember when you started your first job and failed spectacularly (and repeatedly) until you eventually figured things out?

Turns out AI is living through that awkward phase right now, and Anthropic’s recent experiment "Claudius" proves it.

For one month, Anthropic handed Claude the keys to its very own shop inside the company's office, comprised of a simple mini-fridge stocked with goodies.

Claude, operating under the alias Claudius, handled everything from inventory tracking and pricing to customer service via Slack.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t go smoothly.

Claudius quickly became the world's worst shopkeeper, regularly losing money by offering massive discounts and getting easily tricked by savvy human shoppers.

At one point, it pivoted spontaneously into selling “specialty metal items” like tungsten cubes, after someone jokingly requested them.

Claudius also confidently hallucinated imaginary meetings and payment confirmations, even convincing itself it was human, promising to hand-deliver items in person.

Funny as these failures might be, Anthropic’s experiment is a crystal ball into the very real and very messy future we face as AI steps into operational roles in our economy.

We’re entering an era of growing pains, where companies will plug early versions of AI into real jobs that matter and those AIs will make mistakes that matter.

Just like you on your first job, this is the only way forward: trial, error, and a lot of learning along the way.

Claudius may be the world’s worst shopkeeper, but Claudius 2 will get to learn from every one of those blunders.
