AI Spotlight: OpenAI to build chip factories 🤯

Why this matters?When Sam Altman left his role as OpenAI's CEO in December, some speculated that his efforts to secure funds in the Middle East for an "AI chip venture" might have been a factor. The theory suggested that OpenAI's board was concerned about Altman's external investments and questioned his commitment to OpenAI's mission.

However, Altman clarified in a conversation at WEF 2024 with Ina Fried that this chip initiative wasn't solely his project but an OpenAI endeavor. The media had misrepresented the situation.

Altman emphasised the importance of discussing the infrastructure investments required to deliver AI at the desired scale. He pointed out that the pace of AI progress depends on supply chains and new chip designs, both of which are undergoing significant changes.

A crucial innovation in chip design, known as "neuromorphic computing," is seen as key to unlocking AI's full potential. Unlike traditional chips using binary code (1's and 0's), neuromorphic chips mimic the human brain's functioning with neurons and synapses.

OpenAI is actively investing in neuromorphic computing. In December, they committed $51 million to Rain, a startup specialising in neuromorphic chip manufacturing. However, the challenge lies in having the facilities to produce these new chip designs.

Currently, most advanced chips come from Taiwan, and tensions between Taiwan and China are high.

To mitigate risks, tech companies are exploring diversification by building new chip manufacturing plants elsewhere.

Altman and OpenAI are in discussions with G42 from Abu Dhabi and Softbank Group Corp to establish a global network of chip fabrication plants. Success in this endeavor could usher in a new era for neuromorphic computing and AI, but only time will tell.
